Several Vampire movies that are better than your favorite Vampire movies.

Unless, of course, these vampire movies are your favorite vampire movies.

What follows are a few vampire movies that are personal favorites and are often overlooked, and a very brief reason why they are favorites.
I’m missing out the obvious (Nosferatu,  Nosferatu,  Dracula 31,  Let the Right One In and a few others that seem universally loved.)

Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the Supernatural.

On the way to see her dying father, Lila Lee stumbles upon a band of mindless vampires who haunt the town of Astaroth.  Rescued by a mysterious woman, she’s taken to Lemora’s home.  After a while, Lila discovers that Lamora, although different to the brutal mutant Astaroth vampires, is actually their “queen.”

Why you should watch it.

It’s a beautifully shot, creepy, atmospheric, mostly well acted movie.   Anyone who has a taste for the Gothic type horror movie would find plenty to enjoy here.

Ultraviolet.

No, not the Milla Jovovich movie, but the UK mini-series of the same name.  Sure,  it’s not a movie, but it’s well worth checking out.

A cop investigating the disappearance of his best friend finds a secret government agency dedicated to eliminating the vampire threat.  Taken on by the agency he finds out what happens to his friend and discovers that the agency is working hard to uncover a plot that could lead to the enslavement of the humans.

Why you should watch it.

Intelligently written with a basis in reality and science.  Every episode works as a stand-alone, but the big picture is always there.  This feels almost like the best x-files episodes, but with vampires.  There are several people you’ll now recognize.  Jack Davenport, Idris Elba and even Bill Compton from True Blood playing another vampire.

The Twins Effect.

After The Duke kills his partner, a vampire hunter teams up with a new recruit to stop the vicious vampire Duke from killing the last of the Royal Prince of the vampire nation and bringing the world into darkness, giving the vampires freedom to take over the world.

Why you should watch it.

There’s really only one reason to see this movie.  It’s just a big bundle of fun.  From OTT Jackie Chan fight scenes to OTT vampires.  From silly comedy moments to serious killer vampires, the entire running time is just a bundle of laughs, spectacle, stunts and vampire killing.

Skip the sequel, and the US cut,  Vampire Effect.  Sequel sucks and the reedited, heavily cut US version is almost unwatchable.

Marebito.

After videotaping a suicide, a cameraman becomes obsessed with finding out what drove the man to such a bizarre death.  Exploring the tunnels under the subway station he discovers a “Land of the Dead” and a mysterious lady chained to the wall.  Freeing her and taking her home he discovers that she’s not quite what he thought, and that somebody, or some thing wants her back.

Why you should watch it.

The guy most known for several Juon/Grudge movies has made one of the most interesting and original vampire movies ever.  Gets you drawn right in from the start and you just need to find out what the hell’s going on.

Martin.

A young man, who believes himself to be a vampire, goes to live with his elderly and hostile cousin in a small Pennsylvania town where he tries to redeem his blood-craving urges.

Why you should watch it.

It’s not your typical Vampire movie, and that’s what makes it so great.  It approaches it almost from the “This guy’s just a nutter” angle.  Well made by Romero in what should be one of his best known movies.

Bloodrayne 2.

The sequel to the movie loosely based on the video game.  Rayne is now hunting vampires in the old west.  Following a trail  of death, she comes to the town of Deliverance. A town that is under the vampire Billy The Kid’s control.  With help from the Brimstone she takes on Billy the Kid and his vampire posse.

Why you should watch it.

Uwe Boll follows up his cheestastic original with a fun sequel with some great brutal vampire action.

Vampirology

Rex is a young, glamorous, popular fixture at many London bars and clubs. He’s also a vampire. He has allowed a documentary film crew to follow him round to see what a day in his life is like. Through Fly-on-the-wall filming and interviews with his friends we get to see just how a modern day vampire lives.

Why you should watch it.
